Electronic Low Fuel Indicator (ELFI) Kit

The Electronic Low Fuel Indicator (ELFI) kit is a modern replacement for the low fuel indicator system found on 67/68 and 69/70 Mercury Cougars, Mustangs, and other era vehicles that were low fuel indicator equipped.

The ELFI provides a time delay before the low fuel lamp illuminates and hysteresis at the low fuel threshold (the fuel level must go above the low fuel threshold in order for the low fuel lamp to extinguish once lit).  Both of these characteristics help to minimize or eliminate the annoying flashing of the low fuel lamp which plagued the original low fuel indicator system.

The ELFI was created to answer the following questions:

  • Wish your Low Fuel Light worked?
  • Rebuilt or working LF sender too expensive/hard to get?
The ELFI:
  • Develops Low Fuel indication from the Fuel Gauge Signal
  • LF equipped Fuel Sender not required
  • Replaces Low Fuel Relay
  • Replaces Instrument Voltage Regulator
  • Uses Solid State Instrument Voltage Regulator (SSIVR) (also available separately)

I want to add Electronic Low Fuel Indicator functionality to my non-LF equipped vehicle, how do I do that?
  • Connect the ELFI pins as follows:
    • Ground - Connect one (or both) of the ELFI mounting holes to vehicle chassis ground
    • 12V - Connect to an ignition switch controlled power source, 12V present when ignition is in the Run position
    • ST - Connect to starter circuit, 12V present when the ignition is in the Start position
    • LF - Connect a 12V lamp or LED from this ELFI pin to ground
    • Gauge - Connect to the instrument cluster Fuel Gauge sender terminal
    • SSIVR - Connect to the instrument cluster Fuel Gauge Instrument Voltage Regulator terminal.  The IVR is replaced with the supplied Solid State Instrument Voltage Regulator (SSIVR) as part of the ELFI kit installation
